Scărișoara Ice Cave

Hidden beneath the forests of the Apuseni Mountains, Scărișoara Ice Cave (Peștera Ghețarul de la Scărișoara) is one of the area's most fascinating natural attractions and an unforgettable place to visit during a stay at Casa Milana.

Inside the cave lies an enormous underground body of ice that has been preserved for thousands of years. Visitors descend into the impressive cavern where cool temperatures, rock walls and extraordinary ice formations create an atmosphere completely different from the landscape above. Scărișoara is recognised as one of Romania's most remarkable ice caves and is one of the signature natural attractions of the Apuseni region.

It's a wonderful excursion for families, nature lovers and anyone interested in geology or unusual places. Even during summer, temperatures inside the cave are very low, so we recommend taking a warm layer and wearing sturdy footwear.

Casa Milana tip: Getting to the bottom of the cave involves descending a considerable number of stairs, so take your time and keep a close eye on young children. The effort is absolutely worth it—once you reach the bottom, you'll be rewarded with one of the most breathtaking and unique natural wonders in Romania.

When we visited, our 4-year-old proudly managed all the stairs on her own, while I carried our 8-month-old comfortably in a baby carrier. Every family is different, but with a little patience, it's a wonderful adventure to experience together.

Scărișoara Ice Cave it's one of those places that our daughters still talk about long after the trip—and one we always recommend to families visiting the Apuseni Mountains.

Pătrăhăițești Waterfall

Located near Arieșeni, Pătrăhăițești Waterfall is one of the area's hidden gems. Cascading gracefully over limestone rocks and surrounded by lush forest, it offers a peaceful escape from the crowds and is ideal for visitors who enjoy quiet places immersed in nature.

• By Car: Start from the town of Arieșeni on DN75, turn onto DJ107M toward Pătrăhăițești village, and park near the marked trailhead.

• The Hike: A short, moderately easy walk of about 1.5 kilometers leads you from the village directly to the waterfall. The trail is generally easy, but it can get slippery after it rains.

The walk to the waterfall makes it suitable for most visitors, including families with children. During spring and after periods of rainfall, the waterfall is especially impressive, while the surrounding woodland provides welcome shade on warm summer days.

One of our favourite ways to visit Pătrăhăițești Waterfall is by renting an ATV in Arieșeni. The scenic ride through the Apuseni Mountains is an adventure in itself and takes you all the way to Pătrăhăițești Village.

From there, a 20-minute hike leads to the waterfall, following a beautiful trail through wildflower meadows and a peaceful forest. Along the way, the old tree roots naturally form rustic steps, making the walk feel like something out of a fairy tale.

The combination of the ATV ride, the short forest hike and the hidden waterfall makes this one of our favourite family adventures in the Apuseni Mountains.

Vârciorog Waterfall

Just a 10-minute drive from Casa Milana Apuseni, you'll find the carriage departure point and a convenient parking area directly on the D75, beside the Cascada Vârciorog sign. From there, the journey becomes part of the adventure.

As the horses gently make their way through the forest, you'll enjoy the peaceful sounds of nature, cross a small mountain stream, and take in the beauty of the Apuseni landscape at a slower pace.

Every season offers something unique. In autumn, the trail is framed by vibrant shades of red, orange and gold. During summer, the cool forest breeze makes for a wonderfully refreshing ride. And in winter, the horse-drawn carriages are transformed into traditional sleighs, gliding through the snowy landscape like a scene from a storybook.

By the time you arrive at Vârciorog Waterfall, you'll realise that the journey itself is just as memorable as the destination.

Groapa Ruginoasa

One of the most spectacular natural attractions in the Apuseni Mountains, Groapa Ruginoasa is a breathtaking natural amphitheatre carved by centuries of erosion. Often referred to as Romania's "Red Canyon," its striking reddish slopes create a dramatic landscape unlike anything else in the region.

The trail to the viewpoint takes you through peaceful forests and open mountain meadows before revealing a panoramic view of this extraordinary geological formation. Standing at the edge of the viewing area, you'll quickly understand why Groapa Ruginoasa is considered one of the most photographed natural attractions in the Apuseni Mountains.

The hike is moderately easy and suitable for most visitors with a reasonable level of fitness. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain, when parts of the trail can become muddy.

📍 Distance from Casa Milana: Approximately 25 minutes by car, followed by a scenic hike of around 30–45 minutes, depending on your pace.

🏡 Casa Milana Tip

We recommend visiting early in the morning or later in the afternoon, when the sunlight beautifully highlights the canyon's vibrant red and orange colors. Bring a picnic, take your time at the viewpoint and enjoy the peaceful mountain scenery before heading back.

Although the hike is enjoyable, the breathtaking panorama at the end is what makes the journey truly unforgettable.
